The Silver Shooting Festival Thaler coins commemorate the Swiss Schutzenfest (Marksmen’s festival). First produced in 1842, these Shooting Thalers were struck in very low numbers and were allegedly used as a “bulls-eye” for the competitions. The coin would be attached to the center of a target, and if it was hit, the shooter would receive a larger reward. The coin was continuously produced throughout the years and various Schutzenfests, and while it was no longer shot, it became the traditional commemoratives of these popular Swiss events!
