Statue of Liberty 130th Anniversary Silver Medals

Back-In-Stock: A Stunning 1896 French Medal Revived

1 oz. Silver Statue of Liberty Medals in MS70 back-in-stock!

Standing over 150 ft. tall, the ”The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World,” or more commonly referred to as the ”The Statue of Liberty,” has become a world-wide icon visited by over four million people each year. As Lady Liberty recently celebrated her 130th Anniversary, collectors are invited to participate by adding the 1 oz. Statue of Liberty Medal Silver Proof to their collections. This beautiful commemorative is bursting with historic symbolism, tradition, and heart as it revives a past medal that was originally struck 120 years ago in 1896.

Nearly an exact restrike of the 1896 medal that was created to honor the 10th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, this newly released Silver Statue of Liberty Medal has resurfaced to celebrate 120 more years of both the Statue of Liberty and the Franco-American Union. Struck by the Monnaie de Paris, each medal contains 1 oz. of .950 fine silver and is available ungraded in black velvet bags or in protective slabs after being certified by the experts of the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). After selling out in only a few days, MS70 releases are again in-stock and available for purchase. Also available are MS69-graded medals.

An outstanding gift from the people of France, the Statue of Liberty materialized the alliance between France and the U.S. during the American Revolution. Because of this significant historical gift, it was only appropriate that both the original Liberty Medal and this stunning commemorative piece were struck by the talented engravers at the Paris Mint. Established in the year 864, the Paris Mint specializes in creating top-quality releases that many times include important, historical elements.

In 1896, numismatics honored the Franco-American Union by showcasing the Statue of Liberty. Continue this historical celebration by adding the newly-minted Statue of Liberty Medal Silver Proof to your collection today.

Unlike the gold coin, each of these medals boast a fine proof finish. A modern depiction of Liberty is found on its obverse, holding a torch in her right hand and a U.S. Flag in her left. The reverse design shows an eagle in flight, holding an olive branch in its talons. Both of these classic American symbols are designed in sharp detail and look especially incredible with the proof finish! To the collectors who were unable to purchase the High Relief Gold Liberty coin earlier this year due to budget constraints, the Silver Liberty Medal provides a more affordable opportunity to add this design to their collection.

Birth of Giant Panda Bao Bao

Female giant panda Bao Bao, which means “treasure” or “precious” in Chinese, was born in captivity at one of the oldest zoos in the U.S. in 2013, namely the National Zoo in Washington D.C. which forms part of the Smithsonian Institution.

She was born 5 months after her mom, Mei Xiang, was artificially inseminated with the semen of her dad, Tian Tian, in March 2013. This was a very special event as it is usually very rare for this species to be bred and born in captivity.

Panda Bao Bao was welcomed with open arms, especially considering that giant pandas are an endangered species with only a few hundred left in the world today. In fact, only an estimated 2000 giant pandas survive today and most of them live in their native land, south central China.

It is said that modern day economic expansion has encroached on their natural habitat, greatly reducing their numbers as well as their chances of survival.

Online Vote

Given that it is a tradition in China to give the names of baby pandas to celebrate the 100th day of their lives, panda Bao Bao also received her name a 100 days after she was born.

Her name was determined by the public via an online vote, making her an instant internet sensation. The name Bao Bao had to compete with names such as Ling Hua, Long Yun, Mulan and Zhen Bao; all names with different meanings.

Public Debut and Popularity

Bao Bao made her public debut at the National Zoo on January the 18th, 2014, when hundreds of visitors came to see her.

Up to this day she remains popular, especially considering that she was named the “most iconic item” in the collection of the Smithsonian museum, during the Smithsonian Institution’s Summer Showdown in August 2014. Bao Bao beated several other contenders like the Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of George Washington, the Star – Spangled Banner and Woody Guthrie’s “This is Your Land”.

More than 900,000 votes were cast online to decide the winner, and panda Bao Bao won by a 123,000 votes! She has turned out to be quite a treasure, as her name indicates.
