Malcolm is described by Manning Marable as that generation’s “…greatest prophet, who spoke the uncomfortable truths that no one else had the courage or integrity to broach. Especially for young Black males, he personified … everything we wanted to become: the embodiment of Black masculinist authority and power, uncompromising bravery in the face of racial oppression, the ebony standard for what the African-American liberation movement should be about. With Talmudic-like authority, we quoted him in our debates, citing chapter and verse, the precise passages from the Autobiography, and books like Malcolm X Speaks, By Any Means Necessary, and other edited volumes. These collected works represented almost sacred texts of Black identity to us.”

Ossie Davis states in his eulogy for Malcolm: “Malcolm was our manhood … And, in honoring him, we honor the best in ourselves. And we will know him then for what he was and is — a Prince — our own Black shining Prince! — who didn’t hesitate to die, because he loved us so.”

The Autobiography of Malcolm X – his life story – was well received upon its release into print in November 1965 – millions of copies sold within the time span of a few years. Ever more impressive, by the late sixties, hundreds of college courses across the country adopted it. His life story became the quintessential story about being Black in America.

Malcolm was foremost an African American, but his influence expanded well beyond the context of African American history. This is highlighted by Imam Zaid Shakir who highlighted that Malcolm belonged to three words: the Muslim, the American and the African. This leaves an example of a great leader – whose words are just as relevant as 50 years ago. It would serve the Muslim world and humanity at large well to rediscover this great leader – a person that had the unique ability to speak from a vantage point very few Muslims have been able to achieve.

With the above in mind, the decision was taken by the Dinar Movement to adopt Malcolm as a permanent symbolic icon on the face of the 10 Dirham Silver Coin. This “non-commemorative issue” – at least not in a temporary sense – will become a permanent feature on the 10 Dirham Silver Coin.

The hope is that this coin will change hands and travel around the world – and become – nothing short of a tool of mass education. Hopefully it will remind the holder of the character, courage and charisma of a beloved Muslim leader, who “rose from the wretched of the earth into the political stratosphere of international power”, inspiring us all to always side with the truth, and defend it, “by any means necessary”.

The Malcolm X 10 Dirham Silver Coin – 1 oz. of .999 fine silver – is available at the Dinar Wakala website. The Dirham – within the Islamic context – holds the distinction of being the currency prevalent in the time of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sm), peace and blessings be upon him. Historically a Dirham contains more or less a 1/10 oz. of silver.

*In the strictest sense this is not a silver coin – given that it is not legal tender – but a privately minted and issued silver round, medal or medallion. This does not limit its use as a currency. Its holders deem it to be a “coin,” especially considering the historic context mentioned above where it “holds the distinction of being the currency prevalent in the time of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sm), peace and blessings be upon him.”
