The mintage of the 2015 Wolfe Creek Crater coin is limited to 666 coins, which makes it extremely limited and should add to the coin’s overall appeal and value. Interestingly enough, the 2014 Meteorite Canyon Diablo coin, which saw a similar mintage figure (666 coins), is currently selling at about $250 per coin at eBay auctions.

Wolfe Creek Crater

The Wolfe Creek Crater or known as Kandimalal by the local Djaru (Jaru) Aboriginal people, which is located in the Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater National Park in Western Australia, is a well-preserved meteorite impact crater or astrobleme (impact structure) with an average diameter of 2870.73 ft (875 meters) and a depth of 196.85 ft (60 meters) from its rim to its existing floor. This makes it the second biggest crater in the world. It is said to have formed when a giant 50,000 tonne meteorite impacted the earth with a speed of 9.32057 miles per second (15 km per second) an estimated 300,000 years ago. This while it is estimated that the distance between its rim and floor was originally more or less 393.701 ft (120 meters) deep. This was before the wind slowly but surely started to fill it with sand over the years.

According to Wikipedia, the European name for the crater, namely Wolfe Creek Crater, comes from a nearby creek, which was in turn named after Robert Wolfe (early reports misspell the name as Wolf Creek). Wolfe was according to recorded history a prospector and storekeeper during the gold rush that established the town of Halls Creek, which is today a sizable town located between the towns of Fitzroy Crossing and Turkey Creek on the Great Northern Highway in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.

It is said that the Wolfe Creek Crater was discovered in 1947 during an aerial survey. It was then investigated on the ground 2 months later, but was only reported in publication almost 2 years later in 1949. Despite this, the Djaru Aboriginal people, who is said to be the original habitants of the area, have known the crater for thousands of years and call it Kandimalal as mentioned above. There are more than one dreamtime story of how the crater was formed. According to one such story Sturt and Wolfe Creek were formed by a couple of rainbow serpents as they crossed the desert, and that Kandimalal is the place where one of the serpents emerged from the ground.

Wolf Creek Films

The Wolfe Creek Crater was previously not very well-known, but the Wolf Creek films released in 2005 and 2013 placed the crater solidly on the map, making it a must visit for travelers. The films, namely Wolf Creek and Wolf Creek 2, are both Australian horror films which feature the Wolfe Creek Crater.

It is claimed elsewhere that the Wolf Creek films were inspired by true events, although a great deal of controversy surrounds any such claim. Nonetheless, the mentioned films have certainly helped to place Wolfe Creek Crater on the map in a noticeable manner.
