Like all coins that leave the Mint and are added into circulation, Presidential Dollars were inspected for any noticeable errors. Inspectors sift through the finished product in search of coins that have errors or misstrikes. These coins will be destroyed and their material reused for new coins. However, errors have been known to slip through, often with help from unscrupulous Mint employees!

2008 Presidential Dollar – Martin Van Buren – Mint Error Missing Edge Lettering

Over a period of several years, small groups of Presidential Dollars were minted with an astounding error. This error was not obvious at first, but glaring once it was noticed. The coins were minted with the edge lettering missing! No small matter since the edge lettering contained the year, the mint mark, and two mottos required by law: “E Pluribus Unum” & “In God We Trust.” A U.S. Mint police officer tasked with guarding the Mint discovered these coins and smuggled many of them out of the Mint to be sold to coin dealers. While this former police officer was caught and prosecuted, these error coins are legal tender and available to own by the general public.

As a leader in numismatics, ModernCoinMart is pleased to offer a variety of Presidential Dollars with Mint errors that have been certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) to authenticate the errors. Each dollar has been encapsulated with a label that has been hand-signed by Edmund Moy, the 38th Director of the United States Mint.
