Movie commemorative marks 50 years of Planet of the Apes

Movie commemorative marks 50 years of Planet of the Apes

In five cult classics and three subsequent reboot blockbusters, the long running Planet of the Apes franchise tells a shocking story of role reversal in which intelligent apes have won mastery over the human race.

Inspired by French novelist Pierre Boulle’s ‎La Planète des Singes, the original Planet of the Apes was released 50 years ago in 1968. Like all great science fiction, the ground breaking adventure probed controversies, deficiencies and questions relating our own society.

TM and © Fox 2018

When a team of astronauts crash-land on a dystopian planet in the year 3978, they find that humans have been subjugated by a dominant race of apes who treat them like illiterate vermin to be killed, enslaved or used for experiments. After surviving a brutal attack, astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) becomes a focus of interest for chimpanzee couple Zira, a veterinarian, and Cornelius her archaeologist fiancé, who controversially try to prove that human society pre-dated their simian culture.

Both a critical and commercial success, the highly influential film helped establish sci fi as a mainstream movie genre. Nominated for three Oscars, it won a prized statuette for outstanding make-up achievement at the 1969 ceremony.

It also laid claim to having one of the best closing lines in movie history. Having escaped Ape City, Taylor discovers the remains of the Statue of Liberty – finally realising that the planet is actually a post-apocalyptic Earth. Lamenting the reckless behaviour of the human race, he yells in despair:

“You finally really did it. You maniacs! You blew it up! God damn you! God damn you all to hell!

50 Years of the Planet of the Apes
2018 1oz Silver Proof Coin

This coin celebrates the 50th anniversary of Planet of the Apes. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver under official licence of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, its reverse portrays an ape from the original movie poster with a depiction of the adobe-like structures of Ape City in the foreground.

A rare and desirable semicentennial memento for movie buffs, the release is subject to a limited mintage of 5,000 coins which come individually housed in presentation packaging.

Chinese Wedding coin portrays Oriental bird symbol of enduring love

Chinese Wedding coin portrays Oriental bird symbol of enduring love

About 12 million weddings are registered annually in China with many more taking place among the Chinese diaspora – estimated at 50 million people worldwide.

Although Western-style ceremonies are an increasingly common choice, many couples opt for more traditional Chinese marriages which take heed of ancient practices and Confucian philosophy.

Some Chinese weddings combine elements of both customs – reflected by the bride who changes from a white gown to a traditional red coloured ‘qipao’ during the celebrations.

Whatever their preference, however, Chinese and other people of East Asian origin value the symbolic significance of Mandarin ducks at the time of their nuptials.

Said to be the most beautiful ducks in the world, Mandarin ducks have special significance for couples marrying in the East.

Referred to as yuanyang, a term embodying both male and female of the species, Mandarin ducks live together harmoniously, remaining faithful for life. Should one outlive the other, the surviving duck is said to be unable to live alone.

As a result, these magnificently coloured birds have long been regarded as symbols of fidelity, affection and enduring love, making them highly desirable gifts among newlyweds in the shape of carved figurines and jewellery.

Chinese Wedding
2018 1oz Silver Proof Coin

Struck from 99.99% pure silver, our rectangle-shaped Chinese Wedding coin honours the high regard in which Mandarin ducks are held, providing a unique memento that all couples getting married would be delighted to receive.

Incorporating the Chinese character for double happiness, the coin’s design also features lotus flowers, lucky symbols often associated with the prospect of children.

Making this doubly meaningful, the coin is housed in a decorative red packet, a customary Chinese means of gifting money at auspicious times of the year.

Roman Legion coin comes with 3D viewer for panoramic artwork experience

Roman Legion coin comes with 3D viewer for panoramic artwork experience

The Roman army was fierce, ruthless and deadly. Extremely disciplined, highly trained and heavily armed, it successfully conquered territories throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

The largest unit of the Roman army, a legion comprised several thousand professional heavy infantrymen known as legionaries. Flanked by cavalry, members lined up for battle in tight formation before marching steadily but relentlessly towards their enemy. As part of a highly coordinated attack plan, leading soldiers launched javelins at their foes in advance of the sword-bearing legionaries who then charged into hand-to-hand combat.

Warfare – Roman Legion
2018 2oz Silver High Relief Antiqued Coin

A fearsome Roman onslaught has been imagined by Perth Mint graphic artist Lucas Bowers for the first release in a spectacular new three-coin series featuring famous warriors. Struck from 2oz of 99.99% pure silver in high relief, the coin’s reverse portrays a Roman legion overwhelming enemy fighters with crushing force during Rome’s campaign against Gallic tribes between 58 and 50 BC.

Just 2,000 of these coins will be issued. Individually ‘antiqued’, each coin has a unique finish conveying the surface abrasions of an ancient artefact.

Wide screen panorama for 3D viewing

The coin’s reverse is part of a larger, coloured panoramic illustration of the battle scene which can be explored on your smart phone with a 3D viewer. Supplied with the first coin in the series only, the viewer can also be used to experience panoramas featuring Vikings and Napoleonic-era cavalrymen – famous warriors explored on subsequent issues in the series.

The Perth Mint’s Jewelled Phoenix takes sumptuous coin design to new heights

The Perth Mint’s Jewelled Phoenix takes sumptuous coin design to new heights

The Perth Mint is excited to unveil a magnificent numismatic masterpiece of unprecedented beauty.

The result of meticulous craftsmanship, The Jewelled Phoenix is an exceptional proof quality Australian coin produced from 10oz of 99.99% pure gold.

Elevating it to the truly outstanding is the inclusion of 1.22 carats of rare natural fancy pink diamonds. Specially selected from the world famed Argyle Pink Diamond mine located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, the majority of the sparkling gems are pavé set in a sculpted rose gold representation of a mystical Chinese phoenix secured to the coin’s reverse.

The phoenix, known as the immortal king of birds, is richly symbolic in Oriental culture. It is shown settling on a fabled paulownia tree, flawlessly struck on the coin’s mirror like table. With three handset pink diamonds denoting its budding flowers, the tree combines with the striking beauty of the phoenix in an overall design that exuded an aura of stunning splendour.

Chief Executive Officer Richard Hayes said The Perth Mint was embracing more and more Asian-style designs as a result of 1oz gold and silver sell outs from its annual Australian Lunar Coin Series.

“We have been issuing commemorative and investment coins with designs inspired by the Lunar calendar and other culturally significant symbols for many years, yet the fine detail and artistry of this latest release has taken our craftsmanship to the next level,” he said.

Presented in a luxurious, custom designed black presentation case, The Jewelled Phoenix offers investors and connoisseurs a rare, timeless and magnificent collectable. Satisfying any potential buyer’s desire for extreme rarity, just eight will ever be produced – a highly auspicious number associated with wealth and fortune in China and other Asian societies.
