WEST POINT (W)

In the 10th and final year of the First Spouse Gold Coin Series, Patricia Nixon is the first coin released in 2016, and will feature a portrait of Patricia Nixon. First Lady Patricia Nixon was born Thelma Catherine “Pat” Nixon in Ely, Nevada on March 16, 1912. She was given the nickname “Pat” early in life by her father.

As First Lady, Patricia Nixon promoted charitable causes, which included volunteerism. She led the acquisition of the largest collection of historic art and furnishings in the White House—one larger than any other administration. During her husband’s administration, Patricia Nixon became involved in the development of recreation areas and parkland, served as a member of the President’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, and supported organizations dedicated to improving the lives of handicapped children.

At the time, First Lady Patricia Nixon was the most traveled First Lady – traveling both with the President and on solo trips – and was the first Presidential Spouse to visit China and the Soviet Union. Because of her frequent traveling, Patricia Nixon became known as “Madame Ambassador.” She was also the first Presidential Spouse to enter a combat zone.

Patricia Nixon died at the age of 81 on June 22, 1993.
