History of High Relief Coins

High relief coins have designs and inscriptions that are raised from the flat surface of the coin. Like a real sculpture, the design is raised so much that it looks as if it is no longer on the surface. Engravers and artists tend to see high relief as the ideal design. This thought is inspired by the amazing coins from Ancient Greece which utilized high relief designs effectively.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens

In 1904, Theodore Roosevelt, the president of the United States, wanted to beautify American coins. So he proposed Augustus Saint-Gaudens as the sculptor for the task. However, Saint-Gaudens had very little experience with the mint so he created a very beautiful, high relief design, $20 dollar coin known as the Double Eagle in 1907. Unfortunately, he died before the coin was struck. Eventually, the engravers at the U.S. mint opted for a low relief design of this coin because his high relief design had to be struck up to 11 times in order to produce the final coin.

The Liberty design on the obverse of the coin had a lady holding an olive branch and a torch. The rays of the sun and a portion of the Capitol were visible at the base of the design. Many believe that this is one of the most beautiful American coin designs ever created. The low relief coin was produced and modified later to include the words “In God We Trust”. This design was minted between 1907 and 1933.

By 2009, the technology to strike the type of high relief design that Saint-Gaudens desired was available. So the U.S. mint produced an ultra high relief bullion coin of the Double Eagle. If you liked the 2009 Double Eagle gold coin minted in the ultra high relief format, you will love the 2015 American Liberty high relief gold coin.

At least 25 different obverse designs and 16 reverse design candidates were provided by the US Mint before producing the new 2015 high relief gold coin. The final obverse and reverse designs selected for the 2015 American Liberty gold coin draw inspiration from the original Double Eagle coin designed by Saint-Gaudens.
