Year of the Goat: Tokelau Lunar Family Series of Coins

The Tokelau Lunar Family Series of Coins have very recently seen the release of the limited mintage 2015 Tokelau 1 Oz Silver Year of the Goat $5 Proof Coin and 2015 Tokelau 1 Oz Silver Year of the Goat $5 Reverse Proof Coin. Here is my take on the latest releases in this relatively young, upcoming and exciting coin series by Treasures of Oz.

2015 Tokelau 1 Oz Silver Year of the Goat $5 Proof Coin

ModernCoinMart (MCM) has the North American Exclusive distribution rights to this highly limited mintage, high quality proof coin of which no more than 2,500 will see first light.

Each coin has a face value of $5 (Tokelau legal tender), is composed of three nines fine silver (.999), weighs 1 troy ounce, has a diameter of 38.6mm, has a milled edge, features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, a design of a mother and baby goat with the date, 2015, on the reverse and is minted in proof finish by B.H. Mayer’s Kunstpraegeanstalt GmbH, based in Germany.

In addition, each coin comes in its original capsule with a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA).

2015 Tokelau 1 Oz Silver Year of the Goat $5 Reverse Proof Coin

No more than 50,000 of these coins will see first light and will be minted in a reverse proof finish. It is in other aspects the same as the 2015 Tokelau 1 Oz Silver Year of the Goat $5 Proof Coin mentioned above. It also comes in its original capsule with CoA.

 Prices

I couldn’t help to observe that some folks deem the Year of the Goat: Tokelau Lunar Family Series of Coins to be too expensive or not competitively priced. Is this really the case?

The reality is that the Tokelau Lunar Family Series of Coins, which mirrors the animals of the Chinese zodiac calendar, is still a relatively new coin series that has only seen first light in 2013. This contributes to the fact that the market by large is still trying to determine the value of these coins… price discovery is still pretty much in the order of the day. In fact, in my opinion the Tokelau Lunar Family Series of Coins for most part still needs to hit the proverbial mainstream. The reality is that there are still many coin collectors that know nothing or very little about this coin series, although that is expected to change in due course.

Personally I don’t deem the Year of the Goat: Tokelau Lunar Family Series of Coins as not competitively priced, especially considering the prices of limited mintage coins elsewhere in the marketplace. In addition, one of the key distributors mentioned above, ModernCoinMart (MCM), provides in my opinion ample opportunity for price discovery in the form of 99c eBay auctions. I mean, those auctions start at $0.99, if that doesn’t allow for price discovery, what does?

Nonetheless, everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinions, especially if one considers that most of us have different price resistant levels (or price points for that matter). That is perfectly fine. However, speaking in general and not aimed at anyone specific, it is certainly not fair nor desirable to use the spot price of silver as a measure to determine whether the prices on these high quality, limited mintage, proof and reverse proof coins are competitively priced or not. I mean, it is important to distinguish between coins that are clearly collectors and/or numismatic coins and coins that are heavily dependent on the spot price of silver in terms of its value such as ‘junk silver’. The latter is certainly not applicable when it comes to the highly collectible, limited mintage Tokelau Lunar Family Series of Coins, including the recently released Year of the Goat Lunar coins.

I see a bright future for the Tokelau Lunar Family Series of Coins. This relatively young series certainly has a lot going for it in terms of design, mintage, composition and more. Like a good wine, I expect it to mature into something that will not only continue to bring great value to the table in the months and years to come, but also great joy.

The 2015 Goat Family 1oz Proof coins, which will be limited to 2,500 coins, will be released at the same time. This while the following coins will be released at the end of July:

Each coin will feature a baby goat by its mother’s side on the reverse, while Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, will be featured on the obverse of every coin. This is a perfect representation of the Year of the Goat, especially considering that goats are herd animals, where young goats prefer to stay close to their mothers for years. It is said that those born in the Year of the Goat possess a rather powerful commitment to those they love.
