Perth Mint has acquired the licensing rights to one of the most popular classic TV shows ever. This series was the beginning of what became a huge “enterprise”. Although the Original Series only lasted 3 seasons and a total of 79 episodes it lived on in syndication developing a cult following. This popularity would eventually lead the Star Trek franchise to expand its catalog to include five more television series and twelve Star Trek movies with one in the making for 2016.

The science fiction television series Star Trek, eventually acquired the retronym Star Trek: The Original Series after franchise expansion, was created by Gene Roddenberry. The original epic series starred William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy aboard the fictional Federation starship USS Enterprise. The series originally aired from September 1966 through June 1969 on NBC. The series was aired by the BBC in Britain beginning in 1969. The BBC broadcast versions of the episodes differed from the way they had been shown in America. The opening elements of each episode were transposed so that the title sequence was the first thing seen, followed by the teaser, and then into the rest of the episode without a pause. This was done up until the 1990s when fresh prints were obtained and the episodes were broadcast as originally made for the first time.

In 2006, CBS Paramount Domestic Television which now is CBS Television Distribution announced that each Original Series episode would be re-syndicated in high definition after undergoing digital re-mastering, including both new and enhanced visual effects. The re-mastered episodes have only been broadcast in standard definition, though all three seasons are now available on the high-definition Blu-ray Disc format.

James T. Kirk and The USS Enterprise:

William Shatner is the actor that played James T. Kirk and is portrayed on the obverse of one of the Perth Mint 2015 Star Trek: The Original Series proof coins. James Tiberius “Jim” Kirk is a fictional character in the Star Trek franchise, appearing in numerous television episodes, films, books, comics, and video games. As the captain of the starship USS Enterprise, Kirk leads his crew as they explore “where no man has gone before“. Often, the characters of Spock and Leonard McCoy act as his logical and emotional sounding boards, respectively.

James Tiberius Kirk was born on March 22, 2233, in Riverside, Iowa. He was raised there by his parents, George and Winona Kirk. At Starfleet Academy, Kirk became the only student to defeat the Kobayashi Maru test, garnering a commendation for original thinking by reprogramming the computer to make the “no-win scenario” winnable. Kirk was granted a field commission as an ensign and posted to advance training aboard the USS Republic. He then was promoted to lieutenant junior grade and returned to Starfleet Academy as a student instructor. Kirk became Starfleet’s youngest captain when he received command of the USS Enterprise for a five-year mission, three years of which are depicted in the original Star Trek series.

Starship Enterprise

The other coin in the 2 coin series depicts the USS Enterprise also known as the Starship Enterprise. It is the central starship in the fictional Star Trek franchise – The original Star Trek series featured a voice-over by USS Enterprise captain, James T. Kirk (William Shatner), which describes the mission of Enterprise as “to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before”. The ship’s design has formed the basis for one of science fictions most iconic images.
