2015 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives Florida Panther Colorized Silver $1 Dollar

The 2015 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives Florida Panther Colorized Silver $1 Dollar is the second coin that will be released in the Florida Natives Coin Series by online coin & precious metals dealer, ModernCoinMart (MCM). It is a coin series that commemorates Florida Native Wildlife.

2015 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives Florida Panther Silver Dollar – Obverse

The Florida Panther coin is set to be released at the 2015 FUN Show, or more formally known as the 2015 Florida United Numismatists convention, which will be held January 8-11 in the OCCC West Building, Hall WD, Orlando, Florida. The first coin in the Florida Natives Coin Series, the 2014 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives American Alligator Colorized Silver $1 Dollar, was released by ModernCoinMart (MCM) at the 2014 FUN Show.

Beyond the inscriptions, the second coin in the Florida Natives Coin Series, the extremely limited 2015 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives Florida Panther Colorized Silver $1 Dollar, features the endangered Florida panther in its natural habitat in South Florida on the reverse of the coin, while Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of the coin.

The Florida Panther

The Florida panther, also known outside the southeastern United States and Florida as the catamount, cougar, mountain lion and puma, is an endangered subspecies of cougar (Puma concolor) of which only an estimated 160 remain in the wild today.

Florida Panther

Florida Panther – Image Source: gettyimages

This is mainly due to the fact that its habitat, namely hardwood hammocks, mix swamp forests and pinelands in Southern Florida, is threatened by human encroachment or human destruction of its habitat. In essence, an invasion by humans of the living space the Florida panther needs to survive.

Many also get killed on roads in collisions with vehicles. A record of 20 Florida panthers were killed so far this year while crossing the road. Nonetheless, there seems to be hope: “Thanks to Defenders’ efforts, a Roadside Animal Detection System (RADS) was installed in January 2012 along a deadly stretch of US-41 that crosses the Big Cypress National Preserve and is currently being monitored to determine whether it is effective in detecting big cats. If effective, the technology may be used to protect panthers and other wildlife in additional parts of Florida” (Defenders.org).

Great progress is being made in the protection of the Florida panther, especially considering that there were only an estimated 20 in the wild in the 1970s. Nonetheless, the fight for the panther’s survival is far from over, especially considering that it is listed on Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species List, where it has a FE or Federally-designated Endangered status.

The FE status means that the panther, as it is exclusively known in Florida and the southeastern United States, counts among “animal or plant species, subspecies or varieties in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of their range. These are considered “Federally-listed” or “listed” because a final rule has been published in the Federal Register” (Bureau of Land Management). It should therefore not come as much of a surprise that it was chosen as the Florida state animal in 1982.

Taxonomic Status

Interesting enough, the Florida panther’s taxonomic status of Puma concolor coryi or Puma concolor couguar, remains unresolved. Taxonomy refers to “the science of defining groups of biological organisms on the basis of shared characteristics and giving names to those groups” (Wikipedia).  Despite this, it doesn’t affect the panther’s legal conservation status, which means it will be protected regardless of the biological designation given to it by humans.

Natural Enemies

It is interesting to note that the alligator, more specifically the American alligator, the animal featured on the first coin in the Florida Natives Coin Series, is a natural predator of the Florida panther.

The above makes sense to at least some extent, especially when one considers that while the Florida panther is large, it is certainly more closely related to small cats (lynx and housecats) than to other big cats (lions and tigers). E.g. adult males can weigh up to 160 pounds (73 kg), which is heavy, but probably not heavy enough when on the wrong side of an American alligator, especially considering that an adult American alligator can easily pull the scale at 790 pounds (360 kg) or higher.

American alligator

American Alligator – Natural Predator of Florida Panther

In fact, it gets even more interesting, the American alligator counts among hares, mice, waterfowl, storks, white-tailed deer, wild boar and various other animals that are considered prey of the Florida panther.

Thus, it may be a case of American alligators that are hunting, killing and eating young Florida panthers, while adult Florida panthers return the favor by hunting, killing and eating small alligators (or vice versa).

Will adult Florida panthers and American alligators hunt, kill and eat each other? It is probably highly unlikely, despite the mentioned weight differences. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Blue Eyes

It is said that Florida panthers are typically born with blue eyes and come standard with spots. This while their eye color change to yellow as they grow older and the spots fade to make room for a completely tan coat.

The 2015 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives Florida Panther Colorized Silver $1 Dollar was designed by Charles D. Daughtrey, staff artist at ModernCoinMart (MCM), as well as photographer and numismatic author.

Charles D. Daughtrey

The Florida Natives Coin Series is the brain child of Mr. Daughtrey who said: “The underlying reason why I wanted to issue this particular series of coins is to outline the fact that Florida’s wildlife is so different from the rest of the country. I’ve lived in many places in this country and Florida is so unique, so diverse and so different from everywhere else.

Mr. Daughtrey is also the very same artist who designed the first coin in the Florida Natives Coin Series, namely the 2014 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives American Alligator Colorized Silver $1 Dollar (see above). He also designed the 2014 Tuvalu $1 Augustus Saint-Gaudens Silver Proof coin (see below), the first coin in the Designers of America’s Coins, which is a coin series that aims to honor great coin designers of America’s coins (or U.S. coins).

2015 FUN Show Release

The 2015 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives Florida Panther Silver Dollar is set to be released at the 2015 FUN show and will be available in both ungraded and NGC graded coins with special FUN show-designated labels. In addition, each coin will come with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), hand signed by Mr. Daughtrey himself.

Furthermore, this three nines fine (99.9%) silver proof coin will be limited to only a 1,000 coins, which is much lesser than the 3,500 mintage the first coin in the Florida Natives Coin Series has seen, namely the American alligator coin mentioned above. In addition, like with the first coin in the series, each coin will be struck by The Perth Mint and distributed by ModernCoinMart (MCM) as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu.

The quality of the coins produced by The Perth Mint certainly needs no introduction here and it is expected to be no different in terms of the quality of the 2015 Tuvalu Florida’s Natives Florida Panther Colorized Silver $1 Dollar.

What is the African Lion?

The African lion, also known as the “king of beasts” and “the king of the jungle”, count among the cats that form part of the lion or Panthera leo group of cats. It is a member of the family Felidae, and is after the tiger, the second largest living cat.

African Lion – Male

The African lion can still be found in the wild in sub-Saharan Africa, including Burundi, where it has a life span of 10–14 years. Like the case is with humans, female lions or lionesses tend to live longer than male lions. The reason for this is primarily because male lions constantly fight with other male lions over territory. This often than not result in injuries that impact negatively on the overall live span of males. Then of course there is the impact of the constant nagging of the lionesses, but that is a story for another day.

The number of African lions has seen a 30-50% decline over two decades during the second half of the 20th century, especially in areas outside national parks and designated reserves. The cause of this is not yet fully understood, but conflict with humans, both in terms of competition for habitat and otherwise; seems to be the primary reason for the state of affairs. This is despite the fact that the lion was at some stage the most widespread large land mammal after humans.

African Lion Pride

African Lion – Members of the Pride

The African lion is an extremely social animal and normally forms part of a group of lions that consist of lionesses, their offspring and a few adult males (normally the fittest and strongest). This group is called a pride and sustains itself through hunting and scavenging. The females normally do the hunting in groups, while the males primarily spare their energy for mating, to mark of territory and to defend that territory against intruders such as hyenas. The video below shows how a male lion marks of its territory and defend its territory…

The typical habitat of the African lion includes savanna and grassland, but when necessary, they may take to bush and forest. Lions are primarily nocturnal animals that like to sleep during the day and hunt during the night. However, they are to some extent crepuscular in nature, which means they can be very active during twilight or between dawn and dusk. Here is a fitting tribute to the African lion…

Where is the Republic of Burundi?

The Republic of Burundi is a small landlocked country within the African Great Lakes region in Southeast Africa.

Flag of Burundi

Flag of Burundi

It is the home of the Twa, Hutu and Tutsi peoples, who have lived in Burundi for over 500 years. Burundi has seen much conflict and strife, including foreign invasion and a bloody civil war. This, a lack of access to education and corruption have and are contributing to the fact that Burundi is today, not only among the 5 poorest countries in the world, but also the hungriest country in the world percentage wise.

Despite the above-mentioned challenges, the people of Burundi are trying to make a new beginning. They seem to place a high value on the sanctity of human life nowadays, especially after the 1972 and 1994 mass killings or genocides that took place in Burundi.
