Volcano Mount Vesuvius Coin – Second Coin in Volcanoes Coin Series

The Mint of Poland has just released the 2015 2 oz. Volcano Mount Vesuvius high relief silver coin. This antique finish, convex, dome silver coin is the second coin in the Volcanoes coin series. This exciting series kicked off with the launch of the Volcano Erta Ale Coin last year. All coins in the series come with real lava inlays from the volcanoes featured – making it a great addition to any collection.

Mount Vesuvius – Most Active Volcano on European Mainland

The second coin in the Volcanoes coin series features stratovolcano, Mount Vesuvius, located in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. This volcano is well-known for its destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in AD 79. Interestingly enough, Mount Vesuvius erupted and released a 1000 times the thermal energy that was released during the Hiroshima bombing, destroying the two mentioned cities along with several other Roman settlements – an example of the immense power nature can muster!

Volcano Mount Vesuvius is believed to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, especially considering its tendency towards violent, explosive eruptions. It is the only volcano that erupted within the last 100 years on the European mainland. This happened on March 18, 1944 and lasted for 2 weeks. The Allies stationed nearby during WWII had to evacuate on March 22. When they returned on March 30, they discovered that all 88 aircraft stationed there were destroyed!

Despite the above, an estimated 3 million people live near Mount Vesuvius today. The risk of an interruption of the size that destroyed those Roman cities in AD 79 is just as real today as it was in the past. This makes Mount Vesuvius both fascinating and dangerous at the same time – the Volcano Mount Vesuvius coin listed here is an excellent opportunity to own a piece of Mount Vesuvius and its rich history.

Volcano Erta Ale Coin – First Coin in New Volcanoes Coin Series

The 2 oz Volcano Erta Ale high relief silver coin, or more formally known as the Niue Island VOLCANO ERTA ALE Silver coin $2 Lava 2 oz Dome Convex Antique finish 2014, is part of a brand new and exciting coin series by the Mint of Poland and Niue Island, namely Volcanoes. A total of 5 coins will be issued in the Volcanoes coin series at a rate of 1 coin per year over the next 5 years, which kicked off this year with the release of the Volcano Erta Ale coin mentioned.

The first coin in the Volcanoes coin series features basaltic shield volcano, Erta Ale, which is the most active volcano in Ethiopia. It is situated in Northern Ethiopia in a badland desert area known as the Afar Triangle (or Afar Depression), which is a geological depression (landform depressed or sunken below the area that surrounds it). It was formed by the Afar Triple Junction, which forms part of the 3,700 mile long Great Rift Valley, a name that was given to the valley by British explorer John Walter Gregory in the late 19th century.

Erta Ale, which means “smoking mountain” in the local Afar language is an impressive volcano to say the least, especially when one considers that the 2,011 feet (613 m) high volcano is among only 4-6 volcanoes in the world with lava lakes. In fact, what makes Erta Ale extra special is that it boasts the longest-existing lava lake in the world, which was first sighted in 1890. For such a lake to exist, the heat flow feeding the lake have to exactly compensate for the loss of heat on the lava’s surface and form crusts that fall back into the depths, which is a difficult and fragile balance to maintain.

Sometimes Erta Ale boasts two active lava lakes at the summit, which occasionally overflow at its southernmost pit, which is known as the “the gateway to Hell” by the locals. Interesting enough, the lava lake on Erta Ale briefly featured in the 2010 movie, Clash of the Titans, during the sequence where Perseus, the son of the mortal Danae and the god Zeus, travels to the underworld.

Erta Ale seems to be a gateway to hell for outsiders, especially considering the legendary aggressiveness of the native Afar people against outsiders. E.g. a team of the BBC was helped and welcomed by the locals in 2009, but a group of scientists or tourists was attacked at Erta Ale in January 2012; leaving 5 dead, others wounded and 2 taken as hostages. The Afar Revolutionary Democratic Union Front (ARDUF), also known as the Uguugumo (meaning “Revolution”), an Afar political party in Ethiopia that was founded in 1993, claimed responsibility for the attack and released the hostages in March 2012.

This while no less than 250 head of livestock were killed on 25 September 2005 when Erta Ale erupted, forcing thousands of locals to flee the area. This is not even to mention the eruption in August 2007 and the eruption on 4 November 2008.

The dangers locals present to outsiders, and the fact that the area surrounding Erta Ale is of the most inhospitable terrain on Earth, makes it the most inaccessible volcano on planet earth. This contributes to the fact that little is known about Erta Ale. For those brave enough to risk a visit to Erta Ale, who have a hunger for adventure, it is recommended to go with an armed escort of at least two guards.

For the less adventurous, I strongly recommend buying the 2 oz Volcano Erta Ale high relief silver coin (Niue Island 2014 2$ Erta Ale Volcano coin) instead of travelling to Erta Ale. It is a much safer and cheaper option…

A total of only 688 of these Volcano Erta Ale coins will be minted, which makes it highly limited and sought after, especially considering its antique finish, precious metals content (three nines fine silver), ultra high relief, dome & convex shape and real lava inlay from Ethiopia (which is held in place with a special glue). In addition, each coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) presented in an elegant gift box featuring volcano Erta Ale in its full glory.

Furthermore, the Mint of Poland makes no secret of the fact that it was very hard to reach the current quality of the coin. Special computer software was for one deployed in production in order to capture the finer details on this volcano coin. This left an end product that is in my opinion like no other volcano coin out there. It is impressive and truly a work of art. In fact, I will not be surprised if the Volcanoes coin series attracts a great number of collectors, both those who collect coins and those who collect  work of art in general. This is not even to mention the extremely strong demand for antique finish high relief coins in the coin market today.

I expect the Volcanoes coin series to do extremely well, especially considering the recent launch of the 2 oz Volcano Erta Ale high relief silver coin (Niue Island 2014 2$ Erta Ale Volcano), which is an exceptional coin in many regards and a great means to kick off this new coin series.
