First Coin New Solar System Series: 2017 Saturn Silver-Niobium Proof Coin

The Niobium Solar System series, a new coin series that will focus on the planets in our solar system, is set to turn a few heads. Here is an opportunity to learn more about the first release in this exciting new series and how to secure it for your collection.

2017 Saturn Silver-Niobium Proof Coin

Saturn Coin – First Coin Niobium Solar System Series

Collectors of space coins (planet coins) and low mintage coins in general are in for a royal treat. The first coin in the Niobium Solar System series was recently unveiled, the 2017 Palau Saturn Silver-Niobium Proof Coin.

This limited mintage, collector issue 2017 space coin will be issued under the authority of the Republic of Palau. It will feature the planet Saturn and how it fits into our solar system. The latter consists of an average star called the Sun and a number natural satellites and planets, including Saturn, the second largest in our solar system.

Obverse – Palau 2017 2$ Saturn Niobium – Solar System Silver Coin

The obverse of this 2017 Saturn coin features a depiction of the nine planets in our solar system (and their orbital rings), namely Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and the dwarf planet Pluto. It also features Neptune, the god of the sea and freshwater in Ancient Roman religion, alongside a mermaid on a shield under an outrigger canoe.

Palau 2017 2$ Saturn Niobium – Solar System Silver Coin – Obverse

As a point of interest: The Republic of Palau does not make use of a national coat of arms, but only of the National Arms of Palau. This seal, derived from the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, features a traditional meeting center. It is not featured on this coin.

Inscriptions on the obverse of this 2017 silver-niobium coin include: “REPUBLIC OF PALAU 2017,” “2 DOLLARS” and “RAINBOW’S END.”

Reverse –  Saturn Niobium Solar System Silver Coin $2 Palau 2017

The planet Saturn is featured in yellow on the reverse of this 2017 planet coin along with its prominent, three-dimensional rings. The inner niobium ring, made up of 6.7 grams of niobium, was oxidized to obtain the yellow color. Astronomical related symbols, mathematical formulas and a satellite can also be found on the reverse of this proof coin. Inscriptions on the reverse of this 2017 niobium coin read: “SATURN” and “SOLAR SYSTEM.”

Niobium (Nb) – Inner Ring

The Palau 2017 2$ Saturn Niobium – Solar System silver coin is made up of precious metals – an inner ring of niobium (Nb) and an outer ring of silver (Ag). This leaves a rather impressive contrast of colors that certainly adds, not only to the value proposition this coin offers, but to its overall appeal.

Niobium (Nb) – Named after Niobe, the daughter of the mythical king Tantalus.

Silver needs no introduction here. The same cannot be said of niobium. The latter was discovered in 1801, but many collectors have probably never heard of it. It was named columbium by Charles Hatchett, the English chemist who first reported its discovery.

It was discovered that this new element, which is rarer than silver, has chemical and physical properties similar to that of tantalum. This contributed to the fact that another English chemist, William Hyde Wollaston, wrongly concluded in 1809 that columbium and tantalum were identical. The record was only set straight in 1846 when German chemist, Heinrich Rose, discovered that tantalum ores are made up of a second element, namely niobium. However, this did not clarify matters to the extent needed.

Clarification only came later, 1864-1865, when it was revealed in scientific findings that columbium and niobium were the same element. These two names were used interchangeably since then, but niobium was adopted as the official name in 1949. Regardless, the name columbium is reported to be still in use in metallurgy in the U.S.A.

Niobium is used in various applications today, most notably in applications in the aerospace industry, including its use in superalloys that from a critical component of rocket and jet engines. It is said that these super alloys contain a very small percentage of niobium, yet it enhances the strength of the alloy and adds temperature stability.

As a point of interest: Niobium has a melting point of 4491 °F (2477 °C) – more than 2.5 times that of silver (1763.2 °F/961.78 °C).

Saturn – Second Largest Planet

Saturn, named after the Roman god of agriculture, is a giant planet that consists mainly of helium and hydrogen. It is the second largest planet with an average radius of almost 10 times that of Earth. Saturn is so big in terms of volume, that if it was hollow, no less than 764 Earths would be able to fit inside of it. Despite this, it is said to be the only planet in our solar system that is less dense than water.

Saturn has a noticeable ring system of which the rings, 3 discontinuous arcs and 9 main rings, are predominantly made up of ice and to a lesser extent rocky debris and dust. In addition, Saturn is orbited by no less than 62 moons, excluding hundreds of moonlets comprising the rings. Titan, the second largest in our solar system and the largest moon of Saturn, is bigger than the planet Mercury!

Saturn, the 6th planet from the Sun, is extremely cold with an average temperature of -228 °F (-178 °C). The is much colder that the coldest temperature that was ever recorded on Earth, namely −128.6 °F (−89.2 °C). It was directly recorded more than 33 years ago, at ground level at the Soviet Vostok Station in Antarctica on July 21, 1983.

Why purchase the 2017 Saturn Silver-Niobium Proof Coin?

Popular Collecting Theme: The collecting of coins based on a theme seem to be very popular when it comes to cosmic/space/planet/astronomical themed coins such as the 2017 Saturn Silver-Niobium Proof Coin.

Our Solar System

The discovery of new planets is expected to fuel demand for space coins even more. E.g. NASA has recently discovered a planetary system of no less than 7 Earth-size planets that are orbiting a single star – 235 trillion miles (378 trillion kilometers) or 40 light-years away!

Low Mintage: No more than 3000 of these 2017 space coins will be minted and distributed worldwide. This is a tiny number compared to the number of coins that were released in a similar series in Austria, the “Austria: Silver-Niobium 25 euro coin” series.

The first coin issued in that series, the 2003 25 euro: 700 Years City of Hall in Tyrol (see the image below), saw a total mintage of 50,000 coins. It sold out and has seen a more than 8 times increase in price since its release. Its original price was more or less €70 (or about $74). Today it is selling for $650 – $1000 per coin!

Given a tiny mintage of only 3000 coins, it will come as no surprise if the 2017 Saturn Silver-Niobium proof coin does better than the Austrian coin in the years to come.

Low mintage coins do not guarantee price increases. However, looking from a demand vs supply perspective, chances are better that such coins will see price increases, especially when the coins are part of a popular collector theme.

One Coin per Year: Starting with the Palau 2017 2$ Saturn Niobium – Solar System silver coin, only one coin will be issued per year in the Palau series. This is hugely positive. It will certainly help to make these coins accessible to a larger portion of the market. It should enable collectors to be able to keep up with the series.

Palau 2017 2$ Saturn Niobium – Solar System silver coin

Word is out that 8-9 coins will be issued in total in the series. It seems that the planet Pluto’s future status will play a role in the final number issued. In addition, this means that the entire mintage of coins in the new Palau Niobium Solar System series, will be less than half of each Austrian issue!

Struck in Proof: Each coin in the Palau series will be struck in proof. This compares favorably to the mint state or BU only pieces that were issued in the Austrian series.

High Quality: The involvement of Coin Invest Trust (CIT) and the Mayer Mint will ensure the production of coins of high quality. CIT will serve as production supervisor while the Mayer Mint, one of the most reputable and oldest private mints in Germany, will mint or produce the coins.

Both are market leaders when it comes to innovative coin minting and high quality. It is small wonder that many countries, including the Republic of Palau, feel comfortable to outsource the production of coins to them. Expect this 2017 planet coin to be of exceptional high quality.

Palau Coin: The 2017 Saturn Silver-Niobium proof coin makes a great addition to any collection of Palau coins. Furthermore, it is legal tender of the Republic of Palau – a solid guarantee of each coin’s integrity in terms of consisting of the right quantity and combination of precious metals.

Niobium (Nb) and Silver (Ag) – Each of these 2017 Palau coins comes packed with 8.3 grams of 99.9% pure silver (outer ring) and 6.7 grams of 99.8% pure niobium (inner ring). This leaves a total weight of 15 grams and a diameter of 30 mm per coin.

This is slightly lighter (1.50 g lighter) and smaller (4 mm smaller) than coins issued in the Austria: Silver-Niobium 25 euro coin series. Nonetheless, the Palau series offers overall a solid – if not better – value proposition compared to coins in the Austrian series.

Niobium coins in general, especially the low mintage coins, are increasingly making inroads into the market. I don’t expect it to be different this time around.

Stylish Packaging: Each coin will ship in a capsule seated in a stylish, solar system themed red box and outer white sleeve – similar to packaging in the Austria: Silver-Niobium 25 euro coin series. A Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) will also be included.

Free International Shipping: Pre-order your 2017 Saturn coin from official distributor, First Coin Company (FCC), and you will enjoy free US and international shipping. FCC will also, where applicable, refund any tax or VAT incurred (as per their Terms & Conditions).

The Mongolian Nature series first began in 2013 and featured a wolf howling at a crescent moon. Following releases featured a horse, falcon, and now for 2016 – an owl. Widely collected by numismatists around the world, this is the first-ever series to cut-out each design, rather than pressing a die into a planchet. This new technique requires absolute precision and details of the highest quality. This unique release also features a moon, unlike the horse and falcon designs, which pays homage to the original release.

Ammonites – Prehistoric Creatures

Ammonites, named after the Egyptian god Ammon, are extinct today. The last ones were wiped out, along with dinosaurs, during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event about 66 million years ago. In essence, these prehistoric creatures were squid like carnivores that lived inside coil-shaped shells in schools. Their diet consisted of small fish, shellfish and barnacles, which they entrapped with their tentacles and killed with their sharp, parrot like beaks. It is not difficult to see that they were related to Octopus and Squid (see below).

They ranged in size from small ammonites to ones in excess of 3 feet in diameter. This while females were up to 4 times larger than males. Interestingly enough, scientists use ammonite fossils of different shapes and sizes to determine the age of other fossils.
