2015 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark

As was reported in July of this year (2014), I only became aware of the existence of the 2013 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark after MCF member, joe1320, mentioned it here. It was evidently the first Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with the Chinese Privy Mark issued, and while mintage of a 100,000 was authorized, it has seen a declared mintage of only 10,392 coins. I contacted The Perth Mint at the time and they replied:

Sorry for the delay in replying. The 2013 koala with Chinese privy mark was the first year this was done for the Koala coins. Previously the 2011 and 2012 koala had a Bear privy variant.

Mintage information and descriptions for the privy bullion coins can be found at

http://www.perthmint.com.au//documents/The_Australian_Bu_Privy_Coin_2011_to_2014_Final.pdf

As we only produce the privy coins for a very small number of wholesale dealers and do not sell them to the retail market, there isn’t much in the way of information publicly available for the 2014 version. However one of the companies who have purchased it from the wholesaler has it up on their website at

http://www.perthbullion.com/shop/detail/pmkoalaprivy14sco1/.

I’ve contacted The Perth Mint this time around as well…

To Whom It May Concern:

Do you have any idea when the Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark will be issued in terms of the 2015 coins? Can you give me an idea of the mintage of the 2014 issue this far? I would like to do a follow up article on this one: https://newcoinreleases.com/2013-australian-koala-1oz-silver-bullion-coin-with-chinese-privy-mark/

Thank you for your time and effort in this regard.

The Perth Mint replied:

Dear Paul,

The 2014 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark was a custom mint for a third party, China Gold Coin so I am unable to advise of the Mintage of this coin.

If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards

I replied:

Dear xxxxx,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Can you tell me if there will be any future issues of the Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark or are you only going to skip one year? If it is a custom made coin, why is mintage for the 2013 issue listed at the Perth Mint’s website? Sorry about all the questions, but my readers are going to have several. Thanks.

Best Regards

Paul

My thoughts based on the replies received from The Perth Mint this far…

I strongly believe the Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coins with Chinese Privy Mark were never really intended to be distributed in the West. This is despite the fact that we in the West got our share in the form of 500 x 2013 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark that were sold as single coins. This while word in the market is that the remaining 2013 coins were put together as a set and sold in China.

Furthermore, we do know that the 2014 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark are still available for sale in the West (largely at eBay and from the Perth Bullion Company in Australia), but beyond that little or nothing is known about the mintage of the 2014 coins. Hopefully someone with more information can fill in the blanks for us.

This while the 2013 coins seem to be virtually unobtainable at this stage. This is not even to mention the fact that chances seem less than zero that were going to see the mintage and release of a 2015 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark. As a result of this and the mystery that surrounds this series of coins, if one may call it that, I expect a great future for these coins, especially those coins graded and slabbed by a reputable grading company such as NGC. Let me know your thoughts below. Thanks.

Update:

Latest reply received from The Perth Mint…

Dear Paul,

It was a project the Perth Mint did for China Gold Coin in China. They are not continuing with it anymore.

Its not custom made as it is Australian legal tender coin.

If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards

xxxxx

2013 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark

The 2013 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark, minted and issued by The Perth Mint, can best be described as “elusive” in terms of its availability.

If you’re in the market for limited edition Koala coins, or to be more specific, limited edition Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coins with privy marks, then you might want to consider buying a 2013 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark. This is now provided that you can find one. You will discover that it is hard to get hold of these coins, especially if you’re not based in Australia. These legal tender coins have seen a declared mintage of only 10,392 coins, which is much lower than the maximum authorized mintage of a 100,000 coins as per The Perth Mint website.

I couldn’t find any additional information pertaining to these coins at The Perth Mint website. This is now besides the information that I’ve discovered pertaining to the mintage figures itself, declared and otherwise, as mentioned above. In fact, the only additional information I could find on the coin elsewhere is that the coin is described in the Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2012 (No.2) as follow: “The design on the 2013 Australian Koala – Chinese Characters (1oz) silver bullion coin, consists of a circle enclosing a representation of a koala sitting in the fork of a leafy tree. The coin includes the following inscriptions, ‘AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA’, the Pinyin pictographs pronounced ‘shé’ and ‘nián’ meaning ‘year of the snake’, the Pinyin pictographs pronounced ‘jí’ and ‘xiáng’ meaning either ‘auspicious’ or ‘propitiousness’, ‘2013 1oz 999 SILVER’ and the initials of the designer Natasha Muhl ‘NM’”.

The above is confusing to say the least, especially if one considers the ‘AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA’ inscription as per the Currency Determination, while in reality the relevant coin is inscribed ‘AUSTRALIAN KOALA’. In addition, it seems to be the first Chinese privy mark to have been minted by The Perth Mint. I could also only manage to find a few for sale at eBay Australia. In fact, at the time of writing, there were only about 3 coins left for sale.

Is this coin a sleeper? How many people are aware of its existence? I’ve only learned of its existence when it was recently mentioned by MCF member, joe1320, at this link. It is hard to say with certainty how this coin will perform moving forward, but it seems to have a lot going for it. However, I guess a lot will depend on the declared mintage of the 2014 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark, which can be pre-ordered here.
